SHELBYVILLE, Ky. —

Two men are facing charges after police seized 100 pounds of meth during a traffic stop in Shelbyville.

The Jeffersontown Police Department, DEA, IRS-Criminal Investigations, Appalachia HIDTA, and Shelby County Sheriff's Office were conducting a joint narcotics investigation.

Police said the Shelby County Sheriff's Office stopped a semi on March 30. When deputies searched the trailer, they found around 100 pounds of crystal meth worth $900,000 in suitcases.

Two men were arrested: Alfonso Ruiz Garcia and Edgar Omar Valdez Setelo. They are both charged with trafficking in a controlled substance (first-degree).

Police say the men are from Tijuana, Mexico, and they believe the meth was intended to be distributed in Louisville.

"This was not a chance encounter, it was the result of deliberate coordination and focused investigative work aimed at disrupting the movement of significant quantities of narcotics," said Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders. "By working together across agencies, we are able to identify these operations and intervene before they impact our communities."

Both men were arraigned Tuesday morning, with their next court appearance set for April 9.
